Thank you Dan. I wanted to express a similar view, but decided to hold
back. The Marcellus recording is no doubt a fine performance, but is only
one of many "fine" recordings that are available. With great recordings by
Sabine Meyer, Thea King, Karl Leister, Dieter Klocker and Richard
Stolzman--just to name a few--there is no such thing as a "definitive"
recording. All are valuable additions to the total discography of available
clarinet repertoire.

Lucas, I am pleased that you like this particular performance of K.
622. However, in my opinion, it is unwarranted for you to call it "the
authoritative recording" of that work. For one thing, there is no
authority that establishes performances as in this way, and this means
that what you have stated is simply your opinion. For another, while
there may be many who feel as you do, probably some other number of
people do not find it the definitive reading. I happen to fall in this
latter category.

You might think that I'm simply being churlish here (and maybe I am),
but your statement to a party unknown to me, gives the impression that
there is some official body that votes on authoritative readings and
that Marcellus' recording was so honored. That, of course, is not the
case. Some critics liked it, others did not.

I have no objections if you say that, in your opinion, it is the
authoritative reading.
