!Much of this is actually from a book called "A Musician's Dictionary" by
!David W. Barber. The book is a hoot. There are great illustrations by
Dave
!Donald. It is a must in any musicians library. Barber also wrote a book
!called "Bach, Beethoven, and the Boys: Music History as it ought to be
!taught"
!
!Just thought I'd give some credit where it is due.

You also should check out the late Nicholas Slominsky's Lexicon of Musical
Invective. Granted, we have hindsight to guide us, but some of the ranting
in the prose is quite hilarious (ESPECIALLY Edward Hanslick. Now I can
understand why Wagner wanted to initially name Sixtus Beckmesser in Die
Meistersinger as Hans Lich. ;-) (First rule of thumb in musical criticism,
if you, the critic, don't understand what's being played, make it analogous
to algebra.)

I'll have to look for the Barber on teaching Music History. I've been quite
suspicious for quite some time ( as a music history major as an undergrad,
and a Librarian and Information Technologist (currently seeking work in
Central PA)) about how music appreciation is taught (namely, you vill
listen, und you vill LIKE it, in my schtick German accent).
