The manufacturers would just as soon everybody and their brother was
selling them. But one problem with this is that there would not be enough
instruments to go around. Buffet et al. can make only so many. Instead of
100 dealers with 10 clarinets each for you to try and choose from, you'd
have 1000 dealers with ONE each! Having fewer dealers is to their
advantage for many reasons, and price fixing is probably the least of them.

As you point out, you cannot price with complete impunity. Competition
still exists, and this type hurts small dealers badly. Take the lid off by
abandoning the limited dealer network and the small dealers are history.

I don't know about you, but I work for a small music retailer and I see
this stuff every day.
