Subj: [kl] Buffet Clarinets

I just checked out the Boosey website and their list of "Authorized"
Dealers. My local music store that I have been going to for years (RDG,
Inc. in W. Hollywood, CA) wasn't on that list. I don't know why, but they
aren't.

The funny thing is, they have one of the largest selections of Buffet
instruments anywhere. In the past couple years, the quality of them is
pretty astounding too. I purchased an instrument for a student of mine in
December. I went through about half of the 30+ b-flat clarinets they had in
stock. (they also had 5 bass clarinets, and about 20 a-clarinets) I found
several that were amongst the best I have ever played (of any brand). It
turns out that Bob Gilbert has somebody go through a major store in europe
and hand pick instruments for sale in his store. He then backs them up with
his own warranty, and his house repairmen go through the instrument and make
sure it is in good shape.

Would I go back and continue buying these "gray-market" clarinets? You bet.
I want a horn that is going to play well. If it plays well and is not an
"authorized" instrument, who cares?
