A few comments;
1. There is no rule about what the list "should" be - it evolves, based on
interests and avocations of list members.

2. This is not an American list - one of the things I enjoy most is the
international flavour. (note spelling), and so using "capitalist free enterprise
system" logic as defense and basis of IMO harsh comments to new list member is a
little out of place.

3. WRT to the ads and promotions. The list is self governing; if people don't
like it, they'll leave. However, don't attack them when they speak up - I am
sure that the various sponsors and folks with commercial interests are happy to
know when they are going over the top. As a retailer (not in the music field) I
would be pleased to know that the networking/promotion/advertising I am doing is
meeting a receptive audience.

I do not enjoy the promotions and ads; I use my delete button a lot. I am
especially vigilant with anything that has ebay in the subject line. I also read
very little that has to do with MP3. However, in balance I find the list to be
entertaining, informative and educational.

All I can say is that, over the years, just when I am fed up with the (to me)
uninteresting and inappropriate stuff that gets posted, a true gem appears.
