Any number of reasons. Here are some possibilities but bear in mind that I
have done *NO* research to determine the real cause of the price
differences.

1. Perhaps the exchange rate with Japan is more favorable?
2. Perhaps production costs in Japan are lower?
3. Perhaps Yamaha is trying to gain part of the Buffet market by lower
pricing?
4. Perhaps the local store is trying to move the Yamahas?
5. Note that my Woodwind & Brasswind catalog does make any such distinction
in the wood. Maybe it is a sales pitch in the catalog?
6. Perhaps the description "above average" or "average" refers to the
clarinet rather than the wood. The oddities of English could easily allow
misinterpretation of a sentence. Try checking the web sites and see what
they say. I don't know Yamaha's site but the one for Buffet is
www.boosey.com
