If memory serves me correctly, Stanley took over the chair after
McGinnis left the NYP and Stanley recently celebrated his 50th year with
the orchestra so you can calculate backwards to something like 1948.
McGinnis had a sad ending with his great playing. After he left the NY
Phil, he became a teacher at one of the big colleges in the midwest, but
it did not work out for reasons about which I know nothing. So he came
back to NY but could really not restart his career. There were some
fabulous players in NY at the time. He wound up playing in the Band of
America at the World's Fair and the circus. He should have had better
and was certainly deserving of it when one considers how beautifully he
played. I used to see him at Linx and Long on 48th street. I was in
awe of him and he was very distinguished. He worked hard at being so.
Never a back-slapper.
