Hi Mary

I have the opposite problem - my teacher keeps trying to talk while I'm playing!!

One thing that has to be "negotiated" with us adult students is teaching style.
We're away from the culture that reinforces authority - we are rewarded for
initiative, not following instructions. It's hard to have people tell us what to
do! Added to that, we have genuine enthusiasm for the adventure - I love
playing, here I have a teacher I am paying to listen to me - why shouldn't I play
as much as I want to.

The age difference may be a factor as well, but not out of disrespect, just out
of a general style of dealing with you younger folks.

These are all just from my perspective, a little tongue in cheek. I'm in the
same age "range" as your student, shall we say, and my teacher is younger. It
shouldn't make a difference, but I think that it does in subtle ways. And now I
only play when I'm told to.
