Hi,

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for making a name for yourself
in the music world. I just got my master's degree in woodwind performance in
June of 98 in Georgia. The city where I am living now is B'ham, AL. I have
been playing in a community band for a year now trying to meet other
professionals. Also, I am the clarinet/saxophone teacher at 1 of the major
music stores in town. I am also a member of THE UNION and have only played 1
gig at Christmastime. I realize that gigs generally don't happen all the
time but I haven't even been contacted for Easter gigs.

Along a different 'd', I am also playing in my church's orchestra and the
parts are painfully easy. Basically, it is a test of how much you can get
accomplished while playing all quarter notes or, more commonly, counting 50
measures of rests. Usually on some parts, I will try to improvise a little.
I realize that I am the minority of minorities complaining about this.
Probably 99.5 % of church orchestra musicians
are people that only played in high school and never pursued a music career
and have a difficult time playing 8th's in rhythm.

Whew! I feel better for venting! I would like to talk to the orchestra
director but, most of the music is choir accompaniment. I'm not sure that it
would do any good anyway. Any suggestions!
