For those just starting to really learn what "playing" is about, there must
be _something_ to having a good conductor. My son's part of his conservatory
orchestra under Louis Lane, and he's enjoying every minute working with
maestro Lane. - learning, thinking, and listening>>

Playing under an inspired conductor, who is honestly tring to interpret the music is usually a joy....you don't even have to agree with their interpretation....if his/hers makes logical.
Playing under a bored, tired hack, who is obviously learning the score on your time, is about on a par with living with hemorrhoids.
Too bad the former is so seldom, and the latter is so often....
