For those of you who have sore thumbs, aching wrists, and other clarinet
support problems -- may I invite you to have a look at FHRED, or
Finger-Hand-Retraining-Ergonomic-Device. This is a brass rod that attaches
to the thumb rest and sits on the chair, thus taking the weight of the
instrument off the hand. They come in different lengths and ways of
attaching to the instrument. I own several of them for my various clarinets
and oboes, and, boy, does my right hand love me! The company also recently
introduced a saxophone device that eliminates need for a neckstrap.
