Spencer,
I am very sorry to hear you are having trouble. I had surgery on my =
right hand/wrist in April of 1998. It has been a very long journey =
back. Five different doctors told me I would never play again. Sorry =
to start this on a downer but there is hope! =20
I tried a BG neck strap for several weeks following Carpal Tunnel =
release surgery and came to the conclusion it was a bad idea for me. =
The tension caused by the elastic strap was too much and resulted in =
stability problems with my embouchure and hands. I was using more =
effort to hang onto the horn.
I returned to my surgeon and she suggested that I use a wrist wrap. I =
have one made by the Bodyglove company. It is made of polypropylene =
(the stuff scuba suits are made of) and provides good support. Don't =
wrap it too tight!
You might try the Ton Kooiman adjustable thumb rest. This moves the =
pressure point inside the knuckle and space between the thumb and first =
finger. Check out International Music Suppliers in Des Plains, IL. =
1-800-762-1116. Ask to speak to Lisa Argiris.
Other than rest (and I tried everything to avoid surgery!) you will have =
to see what conservative treatment does. I will keep you in my =
thoughts! =20
Best to you,
Tom Riddle
