I would recommend the following book:

The Clarinet by F. Geoffrey Rendall

It has an extensive section on the evolution of the clarinet.

While there may or may not be internet sources available, I would treat such
sources with extreme caution. Anyone can put up a web page with anything
that they want on it. There are no checks and balances so it may be
difficult to evaluate the authenticity and accuracy of the information. If
you do find something on the net, you would want to check the credentials of
the poster.

For this type of investigation, I much prefer published books as reputable
publishers will only accept material from people with the appropriate
credentials. Although errors and inaccuracies can still occur, it
possibility is much lower.

When I do use the internet, I try to get references to academic and
scholarly resources from the sites that I find.

Don't get me wrong. The internet is a great resource. You can track down
things that may be difficult or impossible to find otherwise. However, it
is also wide open and uncontrolled and authenticity checks should done for
any data that you may find.
