If only I could get this across to the bulk of my students.
On Friday, I was working with a clarinet section from a local middle school,
helping them to prepare for an upcoming festival. As we were working through a
rather muddy section, one of the students muttered, "can't we just play through the
piece"? To which I responded, I am here to help you fix the problems. Once the
problems are repaired we can play through the piece. I also stated that speed at which
we repair these problems is dependant on there concentration and hard work. I am amazed
that perfection can be expected on the football field but not in the rehearsal room. They did manage
to perform much better after our session.

One of the principles I am trying to get into to my students is that we need to hear music
and not the Clarinet. The Clarinet has its own set of problems, just like any other instrument
It is our job as players the know how to play through those problems so that the listener
hears only the music, and is unaware that any such problems exist.
