Gary noted:

<<<I am not sure about gadgets (what about percussionists?) but many trumpet
players are major equipment freaks. Since you can buy good quality
instruments in the trumpet family for a fraction of a single pro Bb (not to
mention a bass cl) many trumpet players own a closet full of instruments of
various types and keys.>>>

Lord, yes: trumpet players must be the worst.

When we have our childish discussions over why my clarinet is better than
yours, it typically comes down to less than a half dozen brand names, with 1
or 2 models each. If you were to peruse http://www.selmer.com and see how
you could order a Bach Strad - the trumpet equivalent of the Buffet R-13 -
you head would spin a bit. While a "standard" model, there are 8 different
lead pipes, two or more tuning slides, 5 bores and 6 bells (all of which can
be ordered out of three different materials). Ever see a trumpet mouthpiece
catalog?

One of the nice things about comparing your obsession to the slavering
hounds in the back of the room is that you end up feeling so normal . . . .
