Sounds to me like you are needed more in the co-principal spot. If so, the
conductor is trying to get the best results possible from the group as a
whole. It probably wouldn't hurt to discuss it with the conductor in a
friendly fashion so that you can understand the reasoning. Would this other
player be able to handle the music of the co-principal part or any sax
parts? Your note indicates that they could not.
In general, I suspect it would not be practical to be co-principal, bass
clarinetist, and sometimes double on sax.
