I was wanting a word with negative connotations, but not too negative,
as in the other thread. Your suggestion of 'superstition' is too
negative. I feel. The other thread explains that.

I think your introduction of 'belief' is close, but used as a verb, as
in, "he believes in ligatures".

You say,

So, actually, I wanted something related to how we interact with
something, because only then does it draw in the context. 'Obsession'
is good, because it functions as a description as well as a noun.

OK, but they're all just objects.

So, my suggestion of 'obsession', or an appropriate use of 'believes
in', is best for what I was trying to convey.
