I know that this thread went in a different direction, but I do think
it's important to keep alive the tenuously established distinction
between toys and tools. All that stuff above falls under the category,
'tools', for me.

Unfortunately, 'toys' sound fun, and 'tools' not!

We need another way of characterising something that isn't properly
connected to the world it's actually designed to live in.

I thought, 'symbol' (as opposed to, 'reality'), but I don't think that's
good enough, because it's too abstract.

And 'dildo' is a bit too explicit;-)
