Hello! I have a college audition on Saturday that means a great deal to
me.
This is one of those auditions that could make or break my choice of
what I
want to do. I am fairly well-prepared and feel confident that I can
play
well. However, sometimes during auditions a reed will start to go bad
or
other factors will come into play and my nerves will get the better of
me.
Does anyone have any advice (psychological, reed-wise) for auditions?
Does
anyone have any routines that work well for them? Thanks

Hi,

I was in Florida last week doing a ClarinetFest and Mitchell Estrin who
is the Assistant Professor of Clarinet at UF in Gainsville and played
with the NY philarmonic for 21 years now was doing a master class.
He gave some tips for auditions and I forward those to you.I hope it
will help you.
1)Audition Psychology
Spent time alone before playing.
don't allow your attention to be distracted
mentally review the piece before playing it,concentrating on how you
prepared to perform that piece.
2) relaxation.
Deep breathing is vital
if you have to wait consider.a) Taking a walk b)reading c)resting
quietly d) DO NOT PRACTICE e) having a snack and drincks such as
banana,apple,crackers,water or fruit juice.
3)Audition techniques
warm up on audition day should be easy, not too taxing, doing general
touch-ups.
Tune with piano when necessary
take your time between movements or pieces
dress confortably but not too informally
4) Audition Environment Possibilities
expect to see a variety of personalities.
improper warm-up facilities, overcowding, little time to warm up
accoustical deficiencies during audition:adjust quickly!(play a few
tasteful notes on stage to warm up

I hope this will help you aand good luck let us know

Musically yours,
