Well, I think I made a misleading move in my post here. What I'd
intended to say was that I imagined that the sorts of physical changes
made by ligature 'overtightening', if indeed there are any, would be
very small.

Added to that, even rather gross changes have less effect on playing
than I would have imagined, as evidenced by sticking stuff up the
mouthpiece. (That's not to say that those *sorts* of changes aren't
what gives different mouthpieces their different characters.)

So the effect of 'overtightening' on actual playing would be small for
two reasons: one, that the physical effect is small, and the other that
even larger physical effects make less difference than you'd think.
