For the Finale folks, I just released Beethoven's Rondino for wind octet on
my Web page.

For everyone, it occurred to me that the copy of the Rondino from which I
worked is a good example of a score which one would not want to run through
the MIDISCAN to MIDI to Finale route. It was an enlarged version of a
miniature score and such a marginal copy (Not to mention still having
rather small staves) would have led to far more work than simply keying in
the music staff by staff, as I did.

This point has been raised before on both lists, so I just thought I'd
offer this short note on my experience. Beethoven surely composed the
Rondino as an octet, but there are lots of places where it is a quartet or
less with various combinations of instruments. That being the case, all of
those blank measures would still have had to be cleaned up had I used
MIDISCAN. As a matter of fact, I DID use MIDISCAN and the results were so
horrible when I saw the first .MND file, that I went directly to Finale
3.7, created an 8-stave score, fixed up the key signatures and all
transpositions of those signatures and began work at my numeric keypad.
The Rondino took about 3 hours over two evenings.

I shall begin Beethoven's Opus 16 quintet shortly. For that piece I have
individual parts which I judge to be decently scannable (we'll see), but
the piano part (with smaller staves for the other instruments above) is
marginal. I'll try scanning the piano part first and tell MIDISCAN not to
consider the instrument staves (I'll do those individually as I did the
Krommer Opus 57 Partita), but I'm not very hopeful that I'll be successful.
I'll report back.

By the way, if anyone knows where I can get the MIDI file of the Opus 16
quintet, please let me know. It will save me a lot of time. I've done a
Web search but haven't turned up anything.
