In a message dated 3/1/00 6:23:59 AM, Tony@-----.uk wriote about
toys and falling in love with them.

In a very similar way, Tony, I have "fallen in love" with mouthpieces. No,
not a particular mouthpiece, but the infinite variations, and how these can
be manipulated to produce a clearer, more focused, more....if I may use the
term....hauntingly beautiful....tone quality.

Not to mention the effects on intonation stability, ease of response, etc.

Last night I read through both the Mozart and Brahms quintets, with friends
who play professionally in Chicago. In short, they are just excellent string
players. The viola player just knocked me out. Such POWER!

Anyway, I played on my * best-to-date * mouthpiece. (Yes David N., THAT one)

I don't believe I ever played with a clearer, more transparent, more pure
sound. I could play passages so softly the strings had to really work to stay
under me. (They were surprised, one said usually when he plays the Mozart,
the clarinet is as loud as the entire quartet). In certain passages I could
become a violin, or a viola. Then I could emerge, like the sun parting a
curtain of clouds, with a clarinet tone that could match and balance the
entire quartet. (Waxing poetic, here.)

I am not saying any of this to brag. I'm saying this because I had a
wonderful time, and my feet are still not touching the ground.

Working with my "toys" has moved me to a higher dimension than I believe I
could have reached in other ways. And that's why I'm doing it.
