John,
I play E-fer and am a high school band director in Texas. I feel that teh
Buffet is the way to go. If you are going to get, get the top of the line if
at all possible. Don't get some Bundy or even a mid-line if you can possibly
get the best. This instrument will probably be one you won't be replacing
for a very long time and you won't have a back-up like you do some of the
other instruments. As far as mouthpieces, I have a Vandoren B-44, but there
are others who like some of the custom made mouthpieces. Tuning is always a
problem on Eb (that's why we call it the little monster). You might see if
there is another band director or some professional in the are who can play
the instrument and check it for intonation with several mouthpieces. I also
have a Bay mouthpiece, but on my instrument, the Vandoren seems to work best
(my instrument is an older Buffet). Good luck with your purchase and
remember that instrument is a dangerous thing in the wrong hands. Let a
really good player, probably your second chair, play it. Good luck.
James
