You've been lucky.

There's no way to avoid spam - there are "mail address collecting agents"
out there that visit sites & collect email addresses out of Web pages. Then
there's other sites you may have visited or registration cards that you've
filled out asking for your email address.

We might hate it, but unfortunately spam works because enough people
actually _do_ visit the spammer's sites and buy things (or participate in a
MLM operation).

I have a "special" address I use for sites where they ask you to register an
email address. For those of you who get multiple email addresses from your
ISP, consider setting one up for that purpose. Then all you have to do is
use it for the registration and then just delete the contents regularly.
