I can personally vouch for only one, an even clearer danger, that can result
from consistent overtightening - with many ligatures you'll end up with a
broken ligature. The metal ones tend to shear off at the bottom of the screw
eyelet. The plastic ones can just crack. I have had loads of trouble with
the thumb part of the screws themselves breaking off of students' Gigliotti
ligatures. Threads may strip. However, this all concerns hardware
liabilities and has no direct bearing on the aural or technical effect of
tightening the screws. In this regard I like Tony Pay's answer the best -
(paraphrasing because I've already deleted his original post) listen to the
result.
