I think it is very important for the reed to seal on the mouthpiece. The table of
the mouthpiece must be flat on the back side rails and around the end of the
mouthpiece window. The reed must also be flat so a seal of efficiency is had between
the two.
The ligature can help or negate producing this seal. Additionally, the ligature will
dampen some of the reed's vibrating properties. The amount of dampening one desires
is subjective.
