Mmmm. This is one I've often wondered about. The two basic camps are 1)
the reed must be free to vibrate _or_ 2) that vibration of the butt of the
reed is actually wasting energy that should be doing something else. I
muse over this and wonder how it all fits together. Do we sacrifice some
energy to get a tone we like? Are we letting the reed flop around for no
reason? I would imagine that some harmonics could be brought out or
muffled according to how and where we attach the reed and even what
material from which the ligature is manufactured.
Though I didn't mention it during the last discussion I very much dislike
absolutes. There many variables that I've considered in relation to
ligatures and for each of those I'm sure that there are 5 or 6 more that
the list could supply.
