Keith Bowen, on Uebel bass clarinets:

On Lesley Schatzberger's Uebel:

I hope it's not too painful news for you, but you missed an opportunity
when I made an excursion into Buffets a few years ago, in order to play
the first performance of Henze's 'Miracle of the Rose'. I felt that the
Uebel wasn't satisfactory for that piece (partly because I was directing
it from the clarinet, and the Uebel's a bit long to wave around), bought
one of those 'long bell' low-C Buffets, and tried to sell my Uebel.

But nobody wanted it. So in the end, not really being a bass player
anyway, I sold the Buffet and keep my Uebel for the few occasions on
which I need a bass.

I never *really* found a satisfactory mouthpiece, I have to say. Reeds
were always a bit of a problem.

On the other hand, with the Uebel bassethorn, I recently tried a copy of
one of Nick Shackleton's bassethorn mouthpieces (one that came with an
old 'Urban' bassethorn, pitched at A=435, and with a much larger
interior) and found that that worked better with it than its own
mouthpiece did.
