As an aside to metal ligatures, I am a complete newbie to playing, and I
have a question about ligatures in general. I have a Rovner Dark
ligature. In general, how does one know when the ligature is too tight
or too loose? Should the reed be allowed to slip around so it can
vibrate as much as possible, or should the ligature be cranked down so
there is a stable base, and only the end of the reed vibrates the most?
With this last question I understand that the end does, of course,
vibrate the most anyway, but with the ligature tightened it would
restrict the movement.

thanks,

Dave
