It is my recollection that the point of tightening the ligature screws
differently was to take advantage of a mouthpiece with a concavity in the
table, near the window. By tightening the top screw a little tighter, the
ligature will spring the reed resulting in a more open facing at the tip,
and a little more resistance - good if your reed is collapsing in mid
concert.
