Exactly!

It is certainly possible to fall in love with the toys. Guilty as
charged--I think it was yesterday that I posted a gush-gram about a
particular mouthpiece 'cuz it works so nicely for me. IMHO, this is
perfectly OK. You have to find out about stuff somewhere; this list has
been a good channel to get information about "stuff."

We tend to focus on the hardware here because it's easy. The mistake isn't
chatting about the hardware. It's making the assertion that there is only
one breed of clarinet/mouthpiece/reed/ligature/pad/mouthpiece patch/neck
strap that will do. Empirical evidence will suggest otherwise. For every
piece of hardware that is unacceptable to you, there is someone out there
that sounds great on it.

We don't chat about the "software" as much. I suspect the reason for that
is that it's harder to do that. Expressing oneself musically is easier to
do with a clarinet than a keyboard for most of us.

Final thought -- what is a toy? One possible definition I'll proffer is a
piece of hardware whose use inspires happiness. At that level, is the
clarinet itself not a toy?
