Teri,

I agree that the bulk of our time should be spent practicing. Often I =
have put forth the same philosophy on this list. Buying the best =
equipment in the world will not help if you are not willing to put in =
the time and hard work required to produce a quality sound. However, =
good equipment can greatly help us to benefit from this hard work. For =
example, to my surprise, I have found that trying higher quality mouth =
pieces has helped me to play more difficult passages, because I have =
more confidence that the note will be there when I go for it. Often =
times we develop mental hang-ups when the equipment we are using works =
against us. This creates times, when we over compensate, and end up =
fighting the instrument without even realizing it. This is why young =
students should have the best equipment possible, along with sound =
instruction.

I don't know how many hours I have spent trying to overcome, what I =
thought were flaws in my playing, only to find that improvement in =
equipment solved the problem, and made me less paranoid about my =
abilities.

I remember a teacher once tried my old Evette Schaeffer, (before I had =
it refurbished) and said, "this horn will make you paranoid." (No he =
wasn't trying to sell me Clarinet.)

P.S. I hope the grammar police are not reading my post to closely. I =
just can't seem to figure out where to put those commas.

Screw, clamp, tape, tie, or rubberband the reed to the mouthpiece, stick =
it=20
in your mouth and practice.

(You guessed it, I skipped this thread entirely.)
