I recommend that you go to the music store pronto and replace that ligature
with one of the cheap, generic, two-screw metal types that sell for about
$2.50 apiece. No, that probably won't become your permanent ligature, but
IMHO, *any* ligature you buy new will perform better than an old one that's
"deformed". A mutilated ligature puts uneven pressure on the reed and will
hold back your learning process. The cheap, new one will probably work
perfectly well for you during the beginner phase, and as you become more
sophisticated about knowing what you want, the cheapie can become your
emergency backup ligature, in case you go pay $20 for one and then drop it
and step on it some holiday or evening when the music store is closed.
Everybody needs a backup. My two cents.

Lelia
