But the trouble goes deeper than that. In some cases we kept the old
spelling and in others we did not. Then of course we have the bad habit of
adopting foreign words and keeping both the foreign pronunciation AND the
foreign spelling.

And we still have some irregular or partially irregular verbs in English.
