Psst… where did you get your string?
I used to use string instead of commercially available ligatures.
I even had a ridge cut into the mouthpiece just below the
window so that the string would stay in place.
Although I thought the string was great, I eventually discarded it
because of difficulties changing clarinets.
The first piece of string, which I still have, I had gotten from
Bellison.
For fun, tonight I took out the Bellison string and tried it. It does
make for a better sound. At least, that's my way of hearing it.
I remember going to fishing tackle shops to try to find similar string.
Sometimes I came close.
By the way, can you imagine what e-mail messages at the beginning of the
18th century would be like?
" I use this and this string."
"No, mine is better. It gives me the harmonics I want."
And so on...
