An inverted ligature is more likely to exert a more even pressure on the
reed, since it does not have the opening right over the reed. If or how
that translates into improved flexibility, tone, etc., I cannot say, but I
use them myself. I use a Rovner on my Selmer C85, which can get a little
shrill without it, and a Bonade on my O'Brien OB* crystal.
