Seems as if there is an active and eager scientific mind revealing itself
here. It does seem as if we could use some of your academic training and
reasoning here.

Leo, I lack the scientific background to really evaluate what you have said
here. I'm trying to do some catch up,, by reading (and re-reading) the Arthur
H. Benade published works.

One of the problems were have here is a lack of a precise vocabulary with
which performing musicians and acousticians can communicate. I despair of
this ever happening, as we as musicians seem to prefer non-precise terms
(dark, bright, chocolately) which we cannot even agree on ourselves.

Also, as Dan Leeson has pointed out so many times, we love to throw out
opinion without reason or fact behind it.

And, also unfortunatley, the internet, and mailing lists like this have
perpetuated and encouraged this practise.

My most recent favorite was that "such-and such" ligature has improved
intonation. I would really like to understand why someone could believe
this. What was the measurement process, how many ligatures were tested, what
the controls were.

Anyway, thanks for your response. I will struggle to understand it.......
