While I find the other thread on grammer useful (I think I'll be talking
English real good as a result,) I figured I'd put my two cents in on
ligatures. ;-)
There are several ligatures which I've tried, all of which seem to have
their good points, but, I keep on coming back to the standard Bonade.
Some of the ones which I recommend that my students try are the standard
and inverted Bonades, Harrison, Gigliotti, and Kaspar. Rovners really
aren't possible for me in this extremely dry climate, since my reeds
tend to dry out while on the mouthpiece, and with the Rovner, they would
end up warped on the bottom. It appears as if the reeds weren't being
held down firmly enough with the soft material. However, some of my
favorite players (in different climates) use them, so you may want to
try them, also.
A good exercise for trying out ligatures is #1 out of the Rose 40
Studies, since this shows flexibility in wide leaps. Then, I'll usually
test the articulation by playing the excerpt from the first mvt. of
Beethoven's 6th, and the Midsummer Night's Dream.
