Why should sloppy, misspelled, and inaccurate communication in language be
any more acceptable that sloppy, inarticulate, and inaccurate communication
in music? Either one suggests an inattention to detail and poor education.
Unfortunately, the prevailing "wisdom" in education these days is that it
does not matter if the grammar and spelling are correct. To put too much
emphasis on these things will "stifle the child's creativity." But not to
stress them will result in young people growing up sounding and appearing
in writing as far less intelligent than the actually are. That cannot
POSSIBLY be good. By the same token, if musicians are taught not to worry
about those dynamic markings, staccatos, phrase markings, etc., and just be
"creative," they will be raked over the coals by competition judges and
auditioners, not to mention audiences, as undisciplined and poorly taught.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
