Subj: [kl] Publication about clarinet for youngsters?
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 09:02:59 -0500

Would you like a publication about clarinet geared toward younger clarinetists? Maybe you are familiar with Flutewise,
Flute Explorer, Piano Explorer. I am thinking along those lines. I have been pestering the publishers and have now
decided maybe it is time to put something behind my pestering. (Everytime I send money for Flute Explorer I write on
the card.."When will we have Clarinet Explorer?")

I am wondering if other teachers, parents, students have been looking for something like this? I have, because my
studio is varied and I have students enjoying Flutewise, Piano Explorer and Flute Explorer, but nothing for my clarinet
students. The ICA journal is too much for them (intellectually and probably price-wise). These magazines give them
some more information that I can't fit into the lesson, and adds to their interest in their instrument. Promoting the
clarinet!

I would like to approach the Instrumentalist Company first. They are already publishing Flute Explorer (fairly new) and
Piano Explorer. These are small magazines, 10 issues per year. With a group of 5 or more the Piano Explorer is only
$5/student! Flute Explorer is a little more.

It seems that a more practical idea might be "Reed Explorer". The other Explorers have some articles that are music
history, or composer bios that are not instrument specific. The Reed Explorer could then feature a specific instrument
or two each time. (I'm assuming that they think there are not enough clarinet students and teachers out there to
support it.)

I want to gather some responses before I go to them, so I, hopefully can say, for instance..."Some other teachers from
throughout the US, etc. have expressed an interest. I, myself would be interested in contributing articles
occassionally, and have found others who might be willing, too." (The current articles are short, easy for younger
people to read, not a huge undertaking for someone to submit.)

So, if you would, send me your thougts!

1-Would you encourage your students to subscribe? Or at least get a copy for the studio?
2-Would you consider ever contributing an article?
3-Do you think there are enough reed or clarinet teachers and students out there to support/justify this.
