I have recently become very interested in barrels and their interior
configurations. I believe we (The LIST we) discussed a week or so back about
how the mouthpiece alone is only half the solution when it comes to a
"focused" and resonant tone quality.

Also intonantion is affected more than we ever wanted to know.....usually
adversely.....by the interior dimensions of a barrel.

Well, I got curious the other day, and in my now infamous trip to the music
store, I saw and purchased a Eddie Daniels Accubore barrel. The "Moennig"
style with the tapered conical bore.

OK, I was skeptical, but hey, I can always sell it to SOMEONE on ebay,
right?

Well, guess what? I LIKE it...even the heaviness of the aluminum.....It
seems to me that the taper of the barrel focuses the tone, and the high
weight content and softness of the metal, made it a perfect "sink" for
absorbing the unwanted vibrations.

Question: has anyone else out there purchased one of these things, and if
so, what do you think of it????

I think the Accubore barrels are a great way of improving an intermediate
clarinet; they seem more focussed and pure sounding, and they are very
consistent and not tempermental. But they don't quite have the character of
a good moenning or Buffet bore. For high end clarinets, I think you should
choose a perfect wood barrell out of thousands.

I equipped a plastic Vito clarinet with the Accubore and it sounds and plays
great. I keep this in the trunk of the car for when I have a little time to
kill. The aluminum barrell improved the performance 200%. I even used it for
outdoor community band stuff when I didn't want to risk exposing my wood
clarinet to weather. I can hit all the high notes easily.
