It's been a while, but i'm still a New Yorkah on the inside. First rule
of living in NY - don't be intimidated. Second, assume that you can work
things out. NY operates on "massive cooperation".

I'd talk to the super and tell him you can't get to Carnegie Hall
without, practice, practice etc. So what should you do? He wouldn't
want to prevent you from gettiing to C. H, would he?

Have a friendly chat with the neighbor. When does she go paly canasta,
mahjong, tennis etc? And when would it not be a problem to her if you
played a little nice music? And which room is better, you'd be gald to
point your horn into a pile of bed pillows - get the picture.

New Yorkers really do have empathy for musicians and students. You can't
just go by your non-NY perception of their tone of voice or choice of
speech.
A little schmooze might help you find some practice time at home :)

Good luck - and stay away from really high notes and stuff that scares or
bores the neighbors :) - Kristin
