And why should listening be inferior to playing? I enjoy both, and think =
I
enjoy playing better because I do such a lot of listening. Right now I =
put a
cassette in my cassette player, and whilst typing this into my computer =
I am
enjoying the Ries Septet, opus 25, beautifully played by the Consortium
Classicum.

-------------------

I think this is quite true; I used to occasionally sit with my clarinet =
teacher and listen for my lesson. That's the way you get to appreciate =
other people's work, rather than just know the 10 or 12 pieces that you =
can keep sharp as a player.

I don't do as much listening as I should but when I do, I usually sit =
down and concentrate on it so I really hear it (as opposed to having =
background music while I do other things).=20

But, what the original article seemed to say is that most people are =
consumers of music, not producers. That's true of anything, and the real =
challenge is reaching them. I remember hearing that Herb Alpert was not =
a good trumpet player technically, but he sure reached a lot of people.=20
