The compression offered by Acrobat is comparable to that offered by GIF; I
tested the size of the GIF files and they would have been in the
neighborhood of 2-2.5 Mb ea (46 of them) for a net savings of about 0. For
jpegs to be effective you have to set the loss factor up pretty high; for
pictures with lots of colors it's barely noticeable, but for "precision"
text it becomes noticeable very quickly.

Perhaps I'll re-group the pages, but there's not much you can do about size
when a picture is 2460 x 3530. The original, uncompressed TIFF files are 26
Mb each; I had to quantize the pictures down to a reasonable level of gray
shades (16).

It's an interesting problem; the resolution of printing is incredible - 400
dpi x 16 levels is pretty rough.
