I got an ENTIRELY different meaning from Avraham's posting. I saw it a
lamenting the fact that the standard set by today's recorded music (near
perfection, what with professional players and digital editing) DISCOURAGES
people from making the music THEMSELVES, even if the result is somewhat
less than perfect. Listening to recordings is marvelous, but not as
fulfilling as making the music yourself. We who continue to play in spite
of our imperfections realize this, the flute player who quit because she
was not "good enough" did not. As the writer asked, "Good enough for
what?" I answer you only need to be good enough to have fun yourself, to
give others pleasure, to stimulate the brain cells, etc., to have a good
reason to keep playing. And the standard to achieve those ends can be
considerably lower than what we hear on most recordings. Recordings can
still serve as examples and goals for our own playing, as well as being
enjoyed on their own considerable merits.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
