Apparently, it was found that bass clarinets NEEDED the second speaker key
to play properly, the larger size magnifying the problems of the single
speaker key. Fortunately for us, smart people eventually learned how to
make mechanisms that automatically engage the appropriate key when
necessary, instead of having two separate thumb touchpieces like some early
bass clarinets have. But for some reason, attempts to employ the same
devices on soprano clarinets have met with very limited (market) success.
I guess most people don't consider the throat Bb to be broken enough to
need the fix.
