In a sort of reverse situation, when I was practice teaching at University
School, we had a kid who had a really bad all-metal clarinet. I never knew
where it came from. He had it when I went there. One day, I went into the
bandroom, and there, wrapped around one of the central support posts of the
ceiling was that metal clarinet. Considering how wrapped it was, he had to
have used it as a real baseball bat! He showed up for class with a nice
intermediate wooden clarinet. I heard later that his parent understood he
"had an accident with his other clarinet." Yeah, right! (The professor
left the metal "art work" on the post for the rest of the school year. <g>)
