Mary,
Kevin and Neil have given best explanations of the issues. And Dee is
right that you do not want any instrument that you do not have 'trail
period'.
1. my good experience with Evette-Shaefer (?midline) instrument.
i had the chance (when an undergrad clarinet major) to choose from a
batch of instruments that the instructor arranged for several of us to
try , Buffets and Evette-Shafers adjusted by Charles Bay.
my choice was one of the Evette-Shafers, the difference in price then
$80. It is an especially fine instrument, and nearly ideal for me.
An example of how a 'best of class' version of a 'mid-line' instrument,
fine tuned by one of the excellent artist/craftsmen can be better than a
random 'top line' instrument.
And my used Buffet A clarinet, fine tuned by Tom Ridenour, is another
gem.
And your son is not one, but there are students that best instruments are
wasted on. I sometimes see top line instruments in the hands of middle
and high schoolers with little interest, rotten embouchures and slovenly
habits for whom good instruments are no better than plastic Artleys. (or
even turn them into 'marching Kaspars")
