Keith concludes his note with the pregnant words "sounded too much like
a soprano clarinet" in reference to some Uebel basset horns.

Who suggested that the basset horns were NOT soprano clarinets??? In
Mozart's Requiem they certainly are. The instruments that double the
female soprano and alto voices are the two basset horns. They never,
never, never double the tenor or bass voices. So since they are
assigned the female lines, one has to question exactly what voice basset
horns are in the choir of instruments.

Many of the instrumentation books call them "also clarinets" or "tenor
clarinets" but I would suggest that they are soprano clarinets in F that
happen to have low notes.
