I have a question about swabbing during a concert:
As principal clarinet, I sit on the outside of the front row of our
concert band. I make it a practice of swabbing a couple of times during
a concert, usually between pieces. I find it necessary, to keep those
nasty side keys clear so I don't get the dreaded gurgle when playing a
side Eb/Bb or a C#/G#.
My question: is it OK to do it during a piece (during a multi-measure
rest, of course!),which is quite noticeable due to where I sit?
Sometimes, it really is necessary. How about blowing out tone holes
(blowing into those same flood-prone holes to get the water out of the
way)? Just wondering about what the general view of this practice is.
It would be easier if I were sequestered in the back, like orchestral
clarinets usually are.
